Selma F. Bartlett Elementary Teaching Garden

Partner with us to build a beautiful "outdoor classroom" garden to emphasize a STEAM curriculum at our school.

About this Project [+]

A brief summary of the project:

Bartlett Elementary School would like to build a raised bed teaching garden on our grounds. The garden will consist of 6 irrigated, raised beds, 7 fruit trees, a shade tree and a teaching area with benches and a white board, for starters. Our school's garden will provide a hands-on, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) related, outdoor learning experience for our students as well as increase our community's access to fresh fruits and vegetables. By partnering with Green Our Planet, we will also have access to a STEAM curriculum for each grade level.

Problem that we are solving

Issues our project will address:

As a side effect of Mohave Desert life, Henderson students and families are not accustomed to seeing or working in a garden. Outside of grocery stores and occasional farmer’s markets, our access to fresh fruits and vegetables is low. By creating a school garden, we will be able to first-hand “grow” interest and ability with a dynamic STEAM curriculum, as well as give our students a feeling of a job well done through teamwork and responsibility.

How we solve the problem

Other reasons we wish to build a garden:

In addition to providing valuable STEAM lessons, gardening provides teachable moments for our students that they may not typically access. In a garden, a student learns responsibility, teamwork, citizenship, sustainability, and respect for nature, for others, and for themselves.

Our impact

Additional Details:

Our proposed school garden will be placed near the JAWS track towards the end of Kiss & Drop. Students and teachers will be working directly with architects and gardeners to plan the very best garden for our school. The curriculum will provide weekly opportunities for teachers and students to not only work in the garden but to consume the fruits of their labor. Additionally to insure the success of our school garden, we will have a service that provides a master gardener to help maintain all aspects required.
